Steps to Cancel a Flight As Per Southwest Airlines Cancellation Policy

You can cancel a flight on Southwest Airlines with a few easy steps. The first step is to visit the official website and then log into your account. Then click on ‘My Account’ in the top right-hand corner. In the middle of the next screen, all your upcoming flights will be displayed from which you can choose the flight you want to cancel. Next step is to confirm the cancellation and select the medium of the refund. In case your ticket was refundable you will have a choice to get a refund in the original form of payment or holding it as a travel fund for future use. If your ticket was a non-refundable one, you could request the refund in the form of travel funds for future use. The last step is to select the yellow ‘Cancel Flight’ button at the bottom of the screen to complete the cancellation.

Southwest Airlines Cancellation Policy

Business Select and Anytime tickets are more expensive, but they offer a generous cancellation policy as compared to the others. If a customer cancels a Business Select and Anytime ticket, he/she gets a 100% complete refund in the original form of the payment. The payment may be in the form of cash or Rapid Rewards points. Although, if you fail to inform the airlines about the cancellation at least 10 minutes before the departure the purchase price of your ticket will be converted to travel funds that can be used in future within one year. If Rapid Points are used to purchase the tickets, those points will also be redeposited into your account. In case you make changes in your current flight, that flight will become a non-refundable one, so it is best to cancel the original flight and re-book it for the ticket to remain fully refundable. Standby travel between the same cities and on the same day is permitted and is free of charge.

Wanna Get Away

Wanna Get Away tickets are the lowest price fares that Southwest Airlines offer. The flight cancellation rules for these kinds of tickets are slightly tighter as compared to Business Select and Anytime. If a Wanna Get Away ticket is cancelled which was earlier purchased in cash the entire amount will be saved as reusable travel funds to be used in future. These funds must be used within one year. You can cancel the flight until 10 minutes before the departure. If the ticket is purchased with Rapid Rewards points, all of your points will be credited into your account. Standby travel requires an upgrade to the Anytime Fare.

Flights Paid with Gift Cards and Companion Pass Flights

The flights purchased with gift cards have slightly different rules as compared to those purchased in cash. In this case, the cancellation is non-refundable. So, if you cancel a flight purchased with gift cards, the amount will be held as reusable travel funds, and it will have an expiry date. Usually, the expiration period is 12 months.
